In a major U.S. policy shift, President George W. Bush announces plans to end shuttle missions after the space station is complete and begin developing a new program to return astronauts to the moon and beyond. The next month, a year after the Columbia disaster, the return-to-flight mission launch date for shuttle Discovery slips to March 2005.
