Shuttle Discovery lifts off, on NASA's first flight since the Columbia accident. NASA quickly discovers more work needs to be done on the external fuel tank, which shed large pieces of debris during the shuttle's climb to orbit. Fortunately, none struck the shuttle and the seven-member crew, headed by Eileen Collins, successfully demonstrated the new in-flight inspection techniques and other safety upgrades implemented after the accident.
