Ocean Conservancy's Shark Finning Petition

Ocean Conservancy and Discovery Channel are teaming up during Shark Week to help viewers learn more about one of the ocean’s most imperiled creatures and how viewers can help save them from the threats of overfishing and habitat loss.

A growing number of shark populations are facing extinction from overfishing and unsustainable finning — the practice of slicing off a shark's valuable fins for soup and tossing the body back to sea. Please sign Ocean Conservancy's Petition calling for an end to shark finning to ensure the United States is a leader in shark conservation and a model for other countries.

Sharks have been hunted for thousands of years. Today they are sought mainly for their fins, meat and liver oil, but also their teeth, hides and skeletons -- as well as for sport. Tens of millions of sharks are killed each year as "bycatch," taken incidentally in fisheries targeting other species. Learn more on the Ocean Conservancy Web site about the threats that sharks face.

We believe it's time to look beneath the surface to see where the health of our planet really begins. It’s time to recognize the source that sustains us day to day with the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe ... to discover that all living things are connected to the ocean. It's time to understand that going green starts with living blue . It's time to start a sea change. Won't you join us?

Discovery Channel fully supports The Shark Conservation Act of 2009 (S. 850), introduced by Senator John Kerry. This critical legislation would strengthen the U.S. ban on shark finning, improve shark fisheries data and encourage international shark conservation. Contact your U.S. Senators and encourage them to join Sen. Kerry in the fight to protect sharks.
