When she signed on as Zeke Tenhoff’s deckhand aboard the The Clark, Emily Riedel knew the day would come when she’d have to take her first plunge into the frigid, murky waters of the Bering Sea.

Recently she told Fox News:

I was more afraid of showing my fear than anything. I knew Zeke was waiting for me to crack and leave, as most sensible people might when they’re faced with diving in forty degree water for hours. And of course, diving for the first time was terrifying… When you dive, you’re in freezing water, the visibility is terrible, and you’re surrounded by a dozen different lines to get tangled in…

Watch as she steels herself and undergoes her Bering Sea baptism:

I remember from my own final qualification dive – in a cold, murky quarry – the panic that almost overwhelms you when you have to take your mask off at 50 feet down and the freezing water hits your face.

But as Emily found out, once you get your wits back it’s a confidence building life-changer. So have no fear, she’ll be swimming like a gold-mining fish in no time. As she admits, “gold is a fierce motivator.”

Check out these Clark Photos to see just how far she goes.
