Dave Mosher![]() Dave may carry quite a bit of responsibility on his shoulders, but affirms he's in the top 5th percentile of enjoying work.
You may know some of my kind: The super-geek. I was the dork who dreamed of becoming an astronaut, the dweeb who woke up at 3 a.m. to watch meteor showers, the nerd who carried around Stephen Hawking books (and actually finished them), the spaz who waxed poetic about the awesomeness of science -- and eventually picked up a degree in it. Yet after a stint on the front lines of scientific research, I found it wasn't my calling. But I loved -- and still love -- to tell a good story. With a journalism degree in hand, I quickly found myself living in a house full of Russian physicists at Fermilab in Illinois, writing for Discover Magazine in New York City, freelancing for Nature.com and ScienceNOW, and cranking out science news for "the" Ohio State University. Yet, like a super massive black hole, the gravity of NYC soon reeled me back in. I packed my material life into a U-Haul and moved there, starting work as a staff writer for LiveScience.com and SPACE.com (both of which are under the Imaginova corporate hood). One of my favorite labors of love: covering NASA's space shuttle and other programs around the United States. Eventually, I discovered how much Discovery Communications likes space. They like it so much, in fact, that they asked me to help build this site -- then handed me the keys to it. The rest, as some person once said, is history. My hope is that you'll find things 'round these parts that are tough to find anywhere else: Online chats with spaced-out movers and shakers, op-eds directly from the experts, creative blogging that delivers more than newsy nuggets, and reflections on where we are, where we've been, and just where it is that we might be going in this big, wide thing called the universe. Whether it's standing on top of an Arizona peak to capture scenes of a world-class telescope being built or flying over the North Pole to witness a total solar eclipse, we'll do whatever it takes to bring space to you with videos and images -- with a little special Discovery sauce, of course. Think of me as your tour guide, or docent. I'm here for you, so interact! Ask questions, share your thoughts, comments and concerns, tell me what you'd like to see more of, or share your stories. I'm only a few words away at DiscoverySpace@Discovery.com, and be sure to check out my "Space Disco" blog to get updated on the latest space science, happenings, gatherings, events and more with a healthy dose of humor. |
