Adventure Sports

cliff diving

Defining what an adventure sport is can be a difficult undertaking because the term refers to a wide variety of activities. These activities include everything from extremely dangerous, life-risking sports to more common traveling activities, such as scuba diving. An activity doesn't have to risk the participant's life in order to be classified as an adventure sport, but, in all seriousness, it helps. Bungee jumping, skydiving, BASE jumping and cliff diving all fall on the extremely dangerous end of the adventure sports spectrum. Other activities, such as sandboarding, mountain biking and even hiking are also considered adventure sports. What makes a sport an adventure sport is how the sport or activity is applied in the real world. When someone gets on a mountain bike and rides around his or her neighborhood, this is considered to be exercise or possibly a recreational activity. If that same person were to ride a mountain bike through the Grand Canyon, it would be considered an adventure sport. The classification is all in the application.
