5. Presymptomatic Testing

Certain genetic conditions are known as "late-onset" disorders because their symptoms do not appear until later in life. Huntington's disease is a fatal neurological condition that usually develops between ages 30 to 50, but can also affect children. The disease is caused by a mutation on a single gene, and each child of a parent with Huntington's has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease. Presymptomatic genetic testing can identify the defective gene, but since the disease has no known cure, it can be a difficult decision for those who suspect they may carry the mutation whether to get tested. Feero said genetic counseling provides important support for people faced with such decisions.
