 10. Whole Genome Sequencing While not a specific gene test, whole genome sequencing is rapidly becoming a major topic of discussion in the world of genetic health and science. Companies are now offering to map out your entire genetic code for a modest fee of around $100,000. However, the cost is falling rapidly, and Feero said he believes genome sequencing will become commonplace in the not-so-distant future. The prospect of gaining such intimate insight into our DNA is intriguing, but pitfalls like genetic discrimination, privacy and confidentiality, test reliability, anxiety and medical dilemmas are likely to accompany this bonanza of genetic information. According to Khoury, "The question we have to ask ourselves is, will these tests do more harm than good?" |
