7. DETECTING AND DIAGNOSING DISEASES EARLIER

Biosensor networks will revolutionize the way doctors detect and diagnose diseases and conditions. Many biosensors are either wearable or are otherwise non-invasive, which could prevent the need for exploratory surgery in particularly difficult cases.

Other sensors are swallowed. A few medical device developers are making camera pills that, once ingested, measure conditions in the gastro-intestinal tract. The pill transmits data to a monitoring device worn by the patient. Eventually, the pill passes through the body and is excreted. Doctors can review the information collected by the monitoring device and look for signs of diseases like bowel cancer. Testing on human subjects may begin as early as late 2009.
