Michael Stein, M.D., is the author of eight books, including six novels and two works of non-fiction. His novels have been national Booksense/Indie Reader's Choice selections and twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His newest book is The Rape of the Muse, released in 2011. His first book of non-fiction, The Lonely Patient: How We Experience Illness, won the 2007 Christopher Award. The New York Times called his second non-fiction book The Addict: One Patient, One Doctor, One Year, "idiosyncratic, gripping and illuminating."
A practicing internist and internationally-renowned biomedical researcher, he has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as being among the top 2% of federally-funded clinical investigators over the past two decades related to his interests in behavioral medicine and wellness, specifically the intersection of substance use disorders and mental health.
