Monterey Bay Aquarium

Inspiring ocean conservation

Since its opening in 1984 on Monterey's historic Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium's mission has been to inspire conservation of the oceans. Consistently ranked No. 1 in the United States for its innovative exhibits and unsurpassed visitor experience, it houses more than 35,000 creatures representing over 550 species in nearly 200 exhibits filling 34 major galleries. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is the first major aquarium ever to showcase the habitats and sea life of a single region; in this case, California's central coast, the heart of one of the world's richest marine regions. Named the nation's most family-friendly aquarium by Parents magazine and a top family attraction in the country by the Zagat Survey® U.S. Family Travel Guide, the aquarium has also grown to become one of the leading ocean conservation organizations in the world. Its science-based Seafood Watch program is a leader in the sustainable seafood movement; its researchers study critically threatened ocean species, including sea otters, bluefin tuna and great white sharks; and it is a leading advocate for ocean policy reform at the state, regional and national level.
