Black bears are normally forest animals. Those that live on the open plains of Labrador are also known as barren ground bears and are larger than other black bears, and to survive the harsh sub-Arctic winters, they’ve had to adapt.
The black bear’s normal diet is roots and vegetation, but these bigger bears need extra protein in the form of meat, which usually means caribou. They can’t outrun the caribou, so they must rely on the element of surprise when hunting, lurking behind rocks and waiting for the opportunity to pounce.
