If The Christine Rose is the show's Goliath, The Sluicey is its David. Built in the fall of 2010, Ian Foster's rig is a modified skiff with a pontoon attached to one side that barely seats two. He and Scott Foster (unrelated) work with one diver vacuuming the ocean floor with the other monitoring the machinery on board. The Sluicey is tiny, but Ian is only too happy to point out "it's not the size of the dredge, it's how you use it."

IAN FOSTER, 32 — OWNER
Ian is finally taking a risk he's been contemplating for the last couple years: he's quit his full-time government job to take a stab at making his living as a gold dredger. With a psychology degree from BYU, Ian has traveled the world: he was a missionary in Venezuela, did humanitarian work in Africa, mined underground in eastern Utah, and most recently, handled abuse cases as a social worker in rural Alaska. Thoughtful and articulate, he faces huge odds stacked against him as a greenhorn gold dredger — and with a sharp learning curve, he'll have to sink or swim.
SCOTT FOSTER, 30 — DECKHAND
Scott is a more experienced dredger than his friend Ian, and doesn't miss an opportunity to point out his rookie captain's shortcomings. While the two aren't related, they have similar backgrounds: Scott also crisscrossed the globe, serving as a missionary in Brazil, a musician on cruise ships and a boat builder. His goal for the season is to make enough working on The Sluicey to build his own custom dream dredge. Scott just finished a CD of his music, and he and Ian live on the outskirts of town in a shack assembled from salvaged wood.
