Professor David Karl

Dave Karl is an internationally recognized marine scientist at the University of Hawaii. He is director for the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education and co-chair of the Ecosystem Ecology Section.

With more than 35 years of expertise, Karl has published more than 200 articles on biological oceanography and been a participant in more than 70 major oceanographic cruises as well as been a research submersible observer on more than 30 dives. His extensive work has included locations such as the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon River, the subtropical North Pacific Ocean and the Hawaiian coastal waters.

Professor Ricardo Letelier

Ricardo Letelier has more than 20 years of experience in biological oceanography. After receiving his PhD in oceanography from the University of Hawaii in Manoa, Letelier's research included the variety of responses marine pelagic microorganisms, populations and communities had to environmental disturbances and the role these responses had on biogeochemical cycles.

His current research includes phytoplankton productivity in the coastal environments as well as seasonal and longterm changes in pelagic community structure in the North Pacific with an emphasis in phytoplankton production.

Brian Von Herzen

Brian Von Herzen studied at Princeton University, where he spent four years working closely with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.  He wrote his dissertation on global climate models and changes in the Earth's climate.

He later moved to the California Institute of Technology to work on models being developed for terra-forming Mars: a problem related to Earth's climate change challenge.  From these experiences he acquired a detailed understanding of the Earth's carbon cycle and envisioned a possible solution to global warming using a technology-based complex of natural biological interactions.

Subsequently, Von Herzen spent much of his career in the San Francisco Bay Area high-tech industry, where he developed innovative solutions for companies like Pixar, Dolby and Microsoft.

Now, as CEO of the Climate Foundation, he is drawing from that business experience to finally turn his ideas for mitigating global warming into a reality.
