Roger Angel is a University of Arizona regents' professor and one of the world's foremost minds in modern optics. He is currently the director of the renowned Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory and Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics, which made the mirrors for the Large Binocular Telescope, the single largest telescope in the world.

He has won top honors for his many extraordinary conceptual ideas that have become practical engineering solutions for astronomy. Other accolades include fellowships with the Royal Society, Royal Astronomical Society and MacArthur Foundation.

Inspired by his knowledge of optics, Angel has been looking at ways to cool the Earth in an emergency. In particular, he has been studying the practicality of deploying a space sunshade in a future global warming crisis. Angel presented the idea at the National Academy and subsequently won a NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts grant for further research.
