Odyssey on the WebMeet the CrewOdyssey Marine Exploration Inc. (OME) is the world leader in the field of deep-ocean shipwreck exploration.
The Odyssey Explorer is a 251-foot dynamically positioned (DP) ship which serves as Odyssey's primary archaeological platform. She carries fuel and stores for missions of up to 60 days and accomodates 42 crew members, technicians and scientists. The ship has onboard space for workshops, an archaeology lab and multiple cranes. When working on a project, operations are generally conducted 24 hours a day, seven days
ZEUS is Odyssey's Remotely-Operated Vehicle (ROV) which serves as the archaeologist's eyes and hands in the deep ocean. Approximately the size of an SUV, ZEUS stands 10 feet high and weighs 8 tons. With up to 400 HP and driven by eight powerful hydraulic thrusters, ZEUS can operate in depths up to of 2,500 meters (8,200 ft). ZEUS has been custom-designed for deep-ocean archaeological survey and recovery operations, including visual inspection, pre-disturbance photographic and video documentation, scientific excavation and artifact recovery.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has estimated that there are over 3 million shipwrecks in the world. Odyssey's proprietary shipwreck database contains over 3,000 deep ocean shipwrecks that may contain valuable cargo.
In 2003, Odyssey discovered the Civil War era shipwreck of the SS Republic®, 100 miles off the coast of Georgia and subsequently recovered over 51,000 coins and 14,000 artifacts from nearly 1,700 feet deep. In May 2007, the company announced the largest historic deep-ocean treasure recovery of over 500,000 silver and several hundred gold coins, weighing 17 tons, from a Colonial era site code-named "Black Swan." Spain has claimed rights to the treasure, and the case is currently being litigated in US Federal Court.
During 2008, Odyssey located and tentatively identified at least one of its targeted high-value shipwrecks in the “Atlas” search area and Discovery Channel’s cameras were there to capture every discovery. |
