The jury is still out on whether the method below can convince the flies winging around your backyard to take a hike. But, considering how simple and uncomplicated it is, it can't hurt to try, right? Fill some clear plastic bags with water and hang them in the area you're trying to keep fly-free. It won't help with mosquitoes or other winged nuisances, but some people claim it repels flies because of their interesting optics. Flies' compound eyes have thousands of facets that present them with a mosaic picture of the world, so they could consider the light refraction in the water confusing or dangerous.
